Strap on iconic Aussie footwear to beat world record
DID you know the world record for a thong race is held by Austria?
Well, this Australia Day Maroochydore’s Duporth Tavern is aiming to bring that world record home to Australia, where it belongs.
This Saturday from 8am hundreds of Sunshine Coast locals are expected to turn out at the Duporth Tavern to compete in the thong race and all you need to do is wear a pair of our iconic thongs.
General manager and local Surf Life Saving volunteer Aaron Jensen said he was blown away the record doesn’t belong to Australia.
“Mate, I think everyone on the Coast should get involved and take back what
is rightfully ours,” he said.
“What better day to do it than on Australia Day, show the mateship and social
spirit on the Coast.”
The current world record sits at 352 participants but organisers at the Duporth Tavern are hoping to hit at least 500 to make sure the title is well and truly ours.
Duporth Tavern’s Lina Tucker said there will be local live music on the day to make sure every base is covered.
“We will start the registration at 8am and kick off the record attempt at 9am with a free sausage sizzle for all the event participants afterwards,” she said.
“Participants just have to make 1km, however they choose to, which will be around the Duporth Tavern and you must be wearing thongs to participate in
the record breaking attempt.”
You can run, walk, skip, jump or hop your way around the 1km distance, just make sure you are wearing your favourite pair of pluggers.
And if it rains it won’t mean a thing as organisers plan to keep the record attempt going, rain, hail or shine.
